MEET JEREMY
Jeremy Marteney, the General Manager of RLP Mechanical in Texas, is an especially innovative and growth-oriented leader. He represents the kind of leadership Midway Mechanical Services looks for when choosing brands to partner with.
A LEADER IN TRANSITION
“There was this huge support system backing me and the team. It was really exciting. My ideas still mattered.
Jeremy joined RLP only two months before the company transitioned to Midway ownership. Darrin McClary and David Brumley, co-owners of RLP, offered Jeremy the general superintendent position within 15 minutes of his interview. They were enthusiastic about his leadership potential and innovative ideas. Confident in them, and believing he could implement his ideas because of RLP’s agility as a small business, he relocated his family from San Antonio to Dallas within a week.
When Jeremy and his colleagues found out about RLP joining Midway, they were understandably apprehensive about job security and changes to roles. Concerns were quickly alleviated, though: “When I met Brandon and Rodd, I could tell they were real people,” Jeremy shares, “I didn't have the feeling at all that these were executives coming in here to just take over the company and get rid of you.” He says how much he appreciated the support he received: “There was this huge support system backing me and the team. It was really exciting,” he says. He was also emboldened by Midway’s intention to keep management local, sharing, “My ideas still mattered.”
"I could tell they were real people. I didn't have the feeling at all that these were executives coming in here to just take over the company and get rid of you.
30 years in the industry made Jeremy an ideal leader for Midway’s vision. He met with Rodd, the Midway CEO, during the early stages of the transition: “He spent an hour listening to my ideas and discussing my vision for RLP’s future,” he recalls. After Jeremy presented a 5-year plan and shared ideas for a successful transition, it became clear that he was the best fit for the general manager position. Reflecting on this, Jeremy says, “It was what I’d been working my whole career for. Now I could take my ideas, things that I know work, and implement them.”
The transition wasn’t easy, though. He was still general superintendent as he began taking over more general manager responsibilities. But he says that the support has exceeded expectations. As an example, he points to the help he has received with recruitment and how employee retention has improved.
THE MIDWAY IMPACT
When asked about the RLP culture since the partnership with Midway, he shares that it has only improved: “We have great relationships with people in the field – that hasn’t changed at all.” However, he says that Midway also encourages growth and thinking outside the box, stating, “There is room to step up.”
Jeremy appreciates the improved benefits package with Midway, including less expensive insurance and extra vacation days based on experience. He is grateful that experienced employees are rewarded for their years of dedication. He has never been big on vacations himself, but with an improved salary and extra days off, he now gets to join his wife and plan out meaningful things to do. “It's definitely an experience we're not used to,” he says, “but it's exciting. The quality of time off is different, and I love it.”
JEREMY's Advice
“I think if you're someone who's got ideas for a company, and you want to see them come to fruition, it definitely opens the doors.”
For leaders facing a transition to Midway, Jeremy’s advice is encouraging: Midway is supportive and opens doors for innovative ideas. He says, “I think if you're someone who's got ideas for a company, and you want to see them come to fruition, it definitely opens the doors.” He emphasizes that most importantly, management remains local and operations build on proven successes and existing personnel.
At Midway, we are grateful to have someone as skilled as Jeremy leading the way at RLP. We are excited to watch both him and the business continue to grow and develop.
